The Occupation of Georgia by Invading Russian Forces Has Begun as Dozens of Bombers Target Sites Throughout the Country. According to the reliable information held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Russian servicemen and separatists carry out mass arrests of peaceful civilians of Georgian origin still remaining on the territory of the Tskhinvali region and subsequently concentrate them on the territory of the village of Kurta.

Is Cuil the long awaited Google Killer?
Cuil.com opens today as the worlds largest search engine, boasting some 121+ billion pages in it's index. It claims to be even better than Google at accurate search responses because of it's semantics aware algorythm. I just tried it my self & It couldn't find my page so I think it has a while to go before it's any good. Seriously though, It would appear that they still have some major bugs to work out since the service doesn't seem to return results every time you search and at times I got the 404 page not found error when clicking on their internal links. Overall I'll be keeping an eye on it since 3 times the Google index is nothing to ignore.

CFTC Charges Three with Manipulating Energy Futures
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Thursday announced that it had brought up civil charges on three employees of Optiver Holding BV with attempting to manipulate the futures prices of NYMEX Crude and other fuels in March of 2007. The charges are very timely in that the prices of energy futures are at or near an all time high. Now that the perpetrators are being brought to justice, one hopes that energy futures will return to normal levels. None of the three could be reached for comment but we were able to obtain this photo of the trio at a retreat outside Chicago where they gathered to discuss their defense.

Looking through the indicies and stock indicators today, we're seeing some modest strength coming from the Morgan Stanley Health Care Products Index. I performed a stock chart technical analysis on three stocks that showed some good strength in this sector. My picks are Edwards Lifesciences Corp. (NYSE:EW) , Mylan Laboratories (NYSE:MYL), and Schering Plough Corp. (NYSE:SGP). I liked them all for their trending and relative strength. I'm long each and have tight stops set.Taking positions in medical stocks is a bit unnerving simply because of the somewhat erratic way they trend, so I'm going to be paying really close attention to these. Stock picking has gotten a bit tough lately so our screening tools are working harder than ever. Don't forget to check out the stock message board to share ideas with us on your favorite indicies and industry.

I ran a top-down scan of the major sectors today and SUPRISE! NatGas Wins again. Oh boy, these companies are probably not feeling the love from their customers (DOW Chemical, ect.), but shareholders couldn't be happier. Out of the AMEX NatGas Index I picked Questar Corp (NYSE:STR) and a returning pick EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG). These are both worth looking at despite the markets lack of a clear trend. If you agree that the VIX is headed back to more tolerable levels then these two picks should do well over the next 10 days or so.

In my previous Watchlist post I mentioned that I was keeping an eye on US Steel Corp (NYSE:X). At the time I was interested in how the stock was trending since it was showing nice upward momentum and appeared to be reverting to its DMA(50). It was about to arrive at the 50 day which I expected it to touch. It's usually a sign of strength when traders can't quite wait for it to hit a moving average before pouring back in on decent volume. What I didn't talk about was the underlying story about steel. Some are talking about a commodities bubble, that may be, I'm not going to speculate about that, but I think it's obvious there is a global demand story here.

The Morgan Stanley Commodity Related Index $CRX is still in the crosshairs for it's nice trending. It's been hard to beat lately and I have a few stocks in this index that I'm keeping an eye on. Namely US Steel (X), notice the $8m+ shares short at about 7.5% and 1.5 days to cover. It's in an interesting uptrend which I might buy in a pullback. I'm also watching Devon Energy (DVN) which I'm going to pick some shares up right after I finish writing this. Finally If anyone would like to comment on ConAgra (CAG) It looks like there is tremendous pressure mounting that may make it go either way. When it does move it should be big I think.

Morgan Stanley Commodity Related Index Update $CRX Just hit and came off its DMA(50) so I've got a few picks here with a lot of potential energy. I have them listed in order of strength based on price patterns and each fall within their uptrends. |
Potash (POT) - If I were strictly speaking as a swing trader, Potash would be giving the ol' buy signal. It just broke recent resistance in it's uptrend with all it's other indicators pointing north as well. A buy at this level should yield some quick gains. Be ready to book at the first sign of a breakdown. |
BHP Billiton (BHP) - BHP is coming off the bottom of a weak uptrend. It may strengthen but be prepared to watch closely as it approaches its recent resistance of $95.61
|
Hess Corp (HES) - Hess is moving off of a short term bottom in a really strong uptrend. Pay attention for $129 and for about #133. If it moves above $133, check the technicals and get ready to move higher. Again we might bail at the positive signs of a breakdown. Overall watch Hess because it's in a good trend and might pay off over and again.
|
Baker Hughes (BHI) - Baker Hughes is in a trend that appears to be mixed. I's worth watching here because if it can break $89 then we will have some upside for a while. It also had a 50/200 crossover moving up which is a good sign. It all depends on what the next few days will bring. If BHI can't break its current resistance, It might make a decent short as bulls become exhausted, which could be oon if this stock can't move to the next level.

Morgan Stanley Commodity Related Index
Looks like $CRXis dropping down to touch the DMA(50) within the next few days.
This should turn out to be a higher low as $CRX is in an upward trend.
